Between 1955 and 1958, Maserati produced 28 300S models to compete in the FIA World Sportscar Championship series. The straight six 250F engine was stroked out to 3.0 l compensating for a severedrop in compression to satisfy WSC regulations. New features included DeDion rear suspension, a transverse four speed gearbox and a beefed up suspension for the rougher road conditions of WSC racing. All the nuts and bolts were encased in a beautiful aluminum body by Menardo Fantuzzi. After a shakedown year, the 1956 season saw a class win and a second overall at Nurburgring. Such greats as Stirling Moss and Carroll Shelby drove this car until Maserati retired from racing in 1958.

CMC has delivered another piece of automotive art to die for. They have nailed the look and character of one of the most beautifully designed racing machine ever made. The particular 300S they chose was chassis number 3058 as it exists restored today. This particular car has quite a history that is well worth researching. The model itself is beyond eye candy. That it's comprised of 1,838 separate parts doesn't begin you tell of the design and and execution of this mixed media diecast replica.

There are so many features worthy of note that I can't begin to list them all. When you remove the panels, look at the spring loaded mechanism that actuates the wing fasteners. They are a marvel of miniaturization. The gas and oil tanks are rolled stainless steel sheets riveted into shape. The finned drum brakes are incredibly detailed castings. The dash is a model in itself and of note sports the proper upside down tachometer. With a magnifier, find the tiny stamped metal tag that designates the 3058 chassis nymber fixed to the horizontal tubular frame section just aft of the radiator expansion tank. Let's just say you can spend days pouring over this model and still be surprised to discover some new element to amaze.

If you're a fan of 50s and 60s racing machines like I am or just want an example of 1/18 scale modeling perfection, don't hesitate to add this to your collection. Another plus: this model is so darned beautiful, even your wife will love it, even when she reads the pricetag.
