In August 1965, the producers of the "Batman" TV show approached ultra-customizer George Barris to create a new Batmobile for their upcoming program. The car had to be ready to fly in only 3 weeks. Fortunately Barris had previously acquired the futuristic concept car called the Lincoln Futura. Ford had had it built in 1955 (ten year prior!) and at a cost of $250,000! Barris paid a buck. He saw the bat-like qualities the Futura already had and with a bit of addition... the Batmobile made its debut in October of 1965.

This Super Elite version released in total worldwide edition size under 3,000. The regular Elite version of 16,000 sold out almost instantly.
