From Bill Bennett: The Toyota 2000, when it was introduced, was considered the "state of the art" for a small sports car. It had a double wish bone chassis, a dual-overhead cam head and other features only found in more expensive European models. Shelby was contracted to develop a racing program around it.

The car has a distinctively Japanese-styled body that may not have exactly nailed Western tastes, but the cognoscenti knew this was a special car. The Datsun 240Z, introduced a year later, was its main competition from Japan. The Z was based on a less sophisticated chassis and an engine that was a Datsun 1600cc four-cylinder engine..... one of their standards.... with two additional cylinders added to bring it up to 2393 cc.

The Datsun was a hit with Western styling and was probably less-expensive to build and, eventually over-sold the more expensive Toyota. But the Toyota was a ground-breaking car proving to the world that they could build a really high quality, sophisticated car. There is a large fan base for this car even though they are not nearly as plentiful as the Z.
