AutoArt 2007 Ford Mustang GT Coupe California Special LE 3000

In 2007, Ford released a special edition of the Mustang GT, the California Special (GT/CS), which was a tribute to the limited-production California-only variant from 1968. This year, AUTOArt's Performance Division releases its own scale replica of the 2007 version in striking Performance White. This California Special Coupe version is limited to just 3,000 pieces, 2,000 less than their typical 5,000 limited edition release.

Visual cues that the California Special option adds include the hood scoop, side scoops rear of the doors, GT/CS decals and faded side stripes along the doors, 18" 5-spoke polished aluminum wheels, rear diffuser wing, integrated chin spoiler and "bright rolled dual exhaust tips". All of these features appear to be replicated accurately in AUTOArt's release. In particular, the polished wheels and exhaust tips, which I think really make this model. Under the hood you'll find the Mustang GT's 4.6 liter V-8 producing 300 horsepower and GT/CS correct custom intake engine cover with pony emblem. AUTOArt has done a fine job of replicating the engine, wiring, and GT/CS customization with an overall impressive engine bay.

The Performance White finish of the car is very fitting for the California Special, and helps show off the special pony car's aggressive lines and stance. I found no flaws with the model I received and overall fit and finish were great. Although it doesn't have a working suspension, the undercarriage is nicely detailed with plenty of molded in details and separately applied non-functioning pieces to keep your eyes busy. In addition to the opening hood, the doors open, wheels turn and rotate, and the trunk opens. AUTOArt modeled this car with windows up, which I think adds a nice touch to models in general. It also helps with preventing or at least reducing the amount of dust that enters the interior. The interior is finished in charcoal color and features chrome trimmed gauges on the two-tone dash and chromed shifter knob.

About the only thing I didn't like about this release was the packaging. I'm personally in favor of the Styrofoam box packaging, and the clear plastic package with plastic base was not very impressive for a special limited edition release. The model was somewhat easy to remove, with the exception of these tiny aluminum wires to keep the hood and trunk closed during shipping. In the end, I suppose it’s the model that counts, and AUTOArt's rendering of this pony car is well executed. The model did feel a little light in the hand, but then again it is a performance car, and lightweight is the name of the game! If you are into collecting mustangs, you'll probably want to include this one in your collection. It will feel right at home sitting next to AUTOArt's other Mustang and Cobra issues.
