You could say that this car laid the foundation for Rick Mear’s career as a four-time Indianapolis 500 winner with Penske Racing. Rick failed to qualify for the Indy in an Eagle in '77, but a month later he hooked up with Theodore Racing at Pocono and began driving this McLaren. His best finish was 5th at Milwaukee in August, and he was 6th at Michigan and 7th in Texas. Roger Penske was so impressed with Rick’s performance in this car that he hired him for the 1978 season and the rest, as they say, is history.
