The 1976 Indy 500® was the shortest in history, with just one lap more than the minimum required for an official race. For the third year out of four, the distance was cut short because of rain. Former winner Johnny Rutherford qualified for the pole position and raced against fellow Texan AJ Foyt to an exciting 15 second victory. Foyt often thought he could have caught Rutherford if the race resumed. But it was called after a 2 ½ hour rain delay and Rutherford won for the 2nd time in 3 years.
Penske Racing, McLaren Racing, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum have authorized Carousel 1 to build this replica Rutherford’s McLaren, endorsed by the man himself.
