The Porsche 911 was developed as the more powerful, larger, more luxurious successor to the Porsche 356, the company's first model. The new car made its public debut at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show. One year later, it was ready for production and debuted at the Parisian Auto Show, designated as the Porsche 901. Peugeot protested the name as they owned the trademark to all car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. The 901 became the magical 911.
In the international poll for the award of Car of the Century announced in 1999, the 911 came fifth. Given its lineage from 1964 until the present having supported so many legendary racing and street versions, it is judged by many to be the most successful production car ever produced.
