Accusations fell like rain during the 1969 Trans Am season – beginning with accusations of cheating directed toward the Sunoco team and one involved this vinyl topped top Camaro. The Camaro stood accused of having been left in the acid dipping solution too long, causing the roofs to wrinkle which in turn would make the car lighter from the metal being eroded. It was alleged that the vinyl top was placed on the car to cover up the damage. The team was ordered to remove the top but refused and continued to run the car for several more races before removing the top. The Sunoco Camaros, driven by Mark Donohue, Ronnie Bucknum and Ed Leslie, stole the headlines and brought out record crowds that created new enthusiasm for the series.

Apart from the controversy, this model is a must-have because it showcases the work of one Mark Donohue in his prime. Donohue was not only the Penske team #1 driver, he was also the chief engineer. He made all the final decisions about suspension changes, performed much of the design work, and all the test driving.
