Studebaker 1963 Avanti

Product Review Click for Product Review

For a struggling independent carmaker, Studebaker never let its financial woes stifle its imagination.  Introduced at a time when astronauts first went into orbit, the '63 Avanti surged toward the future.  With sleek styling and world-record-holding top speed, this innovative automobile seemed to parallel America's race to space.  As if to underline its uniqueness, it was the only other American production car with a full fiberglass body.

FM has done a beautiful job in bringing this outstanding car to die cast collectors.  The carpeted interior has a nicely detailed dash and console, and sports tiny seatbelts.  I would have appreciated a tad more detailing on the aviation-style overhead panel though.  As usual, the seats are FM standard molded plastic.  Fabric, or leather, would have really added a ton of class.  Though the engine lacks wiring, it isn't missed because of all the other accessories.  The undercarriage is well done, showing details like the twin exhaust and hidden grille to perfection.  There is also a full suspension.

It's nice to be able to pick up this model and see it from every angle.  Then you can appreciate what uncluttered, timeless styling the Avanti had.  It still holds up, even by today's standards. The issue price is $120. (08/07/1998)
