Franklin Mint 1932 Ford Model 18 V-8 Convertible Sedan - Bonnie & Clyde

Franklin Mint 1932 Ford Model 18 V-8 Convertible Sedan - Bonnie & Clyde diecast car

Steve Massaro has nicely reviewed the limited-edition bullet-riddled version of this excellent replica. Here are a few personal observations following my purchase of the "pre-getaway" version.

From any angle, the '32 Ford Convertible Sedan bespoke style unlike most "everyman's" autos of the era--providing its soft-top was erected. FM's replica exudes the same class with the same disclaimer about the top; but how nice it is to doff that nicely textured top and reveal the absolutely convincing interior detail. Gauges easily stand up to my highest-powered inspection spectacles, and the folded copy of the Joplin Globe residing in the passenger door map pocket is another exquisite example of ultra-fine tampo printing.

This replica is indeed something special. It may even surpass FM's '32 Chevy Confederate Roadster, released just ahead of the Ford, in overall execution. Unlike the Chevy's, the Ford's hood side panels fold inward far enough that they can rest on the firewall cowl, allowing for a realistic hood-open display. And the outside door hinges are far more satisfying than the Chevy's dogleg version. Their bare metal finish, and location of the upper hinge--it should be above, rather than below, the beltline molding--are minor letdowns, and obfuscated by the dual side-mount spares (dealer-installed accessories along with the welled front fenders). My only real quibble (hey, the finest diamond isn't perfect) is with the diameter of the beautifully wrought wire spoke wheels and, consequently, the tires. The factory tire spec was 5.25 x 18, but the wheels scale out to just over 20", causing a lack of airiness beneath the fenders. The issue price is $120.00 + S&H.
