The French company which produced the Lorraine-Dietrich line of automobiles can trace its origins back 12 generations, to 1684. By the end of the 19th century the company was known for its railway products, and a branch to produce automobiles became a reality in 1896. Mergers, World War I, and the Depression yielded the predictable ups and downs of a small European automaker, and by 1930 the de Dietrich family decided to sell off the auto business to concentrate on heavier machinery and aircraft engines, with the last Lorraine car appearing in 1935. Today, De Dietrich Ferroviaire manufactures chemical and pharmaceutical industrial equipment.

In 1922 Lorraine-Dietrich introduced the B3-6, also known by its horsepower category (15CV). For the inaugural Le Mans 24-hour race in 1923, the company entered a three-car team which shown promise. In 1924, the 15 Sport version appeared, with twin carburetors, larger valves, and 4-wheel servo-assisted brakes – the latter a key ingredient to success at the Sarthe. They finished second and third, behind the winning Bentley. But back-to-back success came in 1925 and 1926, the latter year including a 1-2-3 victory.

The Mullin B3-6 is Chassis 122607 and is one of a small number of cars built with leftover Le Mans parts. The six-cylinder engine (the “silken six”) was mated to a 3-speed gearbox. The cabriolet coachwork is by by H. de Corvaïa, an independent Parisian coachbuilder. Peter Mullin acquired the car in 2002 and gave it an extensive restoration.

On the model several details quickly get your attention. The orange side stripe is starkly prominent against the flawless black finish. The chrome perforated step-plates and individual fenders give the car a distinct sports car appearance – be very careful of these jewel-like step-plates when removing the car from the base. The windscreen is a nice piece of casting and includes a handcrank for the lone wiper. Correct registration plates are included.

Moving to the interior, details include the four-spoked steering wheel with simulated wood rim, delicate gearshift and handbrake handles, and separate chrome door handles. The dashboard is a decal, including a representation of the machine-turned center section that holds the gauges. Looking under the car, a fair representation of chassis details are provided, including a tailpipe with chrome extension, and stabilizing arms from the rear axle.

Overall another great representation in the resin Mullin Collection series from Minichamps. The Mullin models are limited to 1948 of each and several are sold out.
