Gabriel Voisin had several firsts – many of them in aviation. He is credited with the first airplane factory and in 1908 aided pioneer Henri Farman in his closed circuit kilometer flight which proved man-controlled flight more definitively than the Wrights. (He would argue for decades that the Wright’s claim to being first in the air was a false one). In 1911 came another innovation – the first metal airplane, and by 1915 he was producing bombers for the French Air Ministry. He also became a car enthusiast, initially with steam cars. By 1919 he produced his first car, the M1, then adopted a numbering system beginning with the 1920 C1, and ending with the Graham-engined C30 introduced in 1939. Voisins participated in numerous Grand Prix races and closed course speed record attempts. Automobile Quarterly V13-N4 has some excellent articles on the man and the marque.

The C27s had 3-liter 6-cylinder engines and an underslung chassis design based on the C24. This Minichamps (No. 9 in the 22-car Mullin series) first appeared at the 1934 Madrid Auto Salon. Chassis 52001 was clothed in a green and yellow body by Joseph Figoni (he would partner with Ovidio Falaschi the following year). The original owner was stated to be the Shah of Persia, but the car may never have left Paris, having been used there by the Persian attaché. The car went through several owners (and colors) before Peter Mullin acquired it and had it restored in this very attention-getting bumblebee paint scheme. The car appeared at Pebble Beach in 1997, but missed out on Best of Show honors.

The interior is one of the best features of the model, so I will start there (a magnifying glass helps!) The dash is exceptionally well done, with the ID plate on the left sidewell depicted, and the speedometer gauge just about readable. The knob sticking out from beneath the dash is, I think, a brake release and should have been white – nothing a dab of paint wouldn’t fix. Delicate door release levers are mounted inside, very reminiscent of my MG. The seats are an outstanding depiction of ostrich leather, with tiny dots and lighter piping visible under magnification. The ‘wood’ trim along the cockpit outline is slightly different in color from the seats, allowing it to stand out a bit better. The windshield-mounted wiper motor is another detail often missed by other makers.

The overall shape looks correct and the color appears spot-on (my photos may be a shade or two too pale due to lighting conditions, so don’t judge by them). The gently tapered black stripe is a prominent feature and Minichamps have carried this out to perfection. Wire wheels are shiny photoetch, as are the typical Voisin external fender supports. Details like the headlight fluting and the French license plates are well executed. Finally there is the exquisite replication of the radiator mascot, the aluminum art deco winged “cocotte”. This is one of the best Mullin cars yet.

I’ve had a soft spot for Voisin models since the Solido 17CV was introduced back in the 1960s. It’s great to see more of this classic marque appearing in 1:43!
