CMC chose this front wheel drive roadster to celebrate 100 years of the Audi marque. It was in 1909 that August Horch left the Horch plant and opened a new factory at Zwickau, Saxony. Having left the company that was his namesake, He named this new endeavor Audi which is the Latin translation for Horch (Hark!).

CMC certainly went all out to provide a model as groundbreaking as the original roadster was when it debuted at the 1935 Berlin Automobile Show. I would say that a 1600 parts count alone can make one impressive model, but the "parts" are just an outstanding tour de force of mixed media modeling that makes this model look incredibly real. There's the use of metal diecut stampings for the grill and bonnet covers that provide scale fidelity that you just can't get from thicker diecast pieces or chrome plated plastic. The bumpers too are hand formed stainless steel secured with tiny nuts and bolts. Even the windscreen is spooky real-looking with a chromed metal frame and glazing that is scale thickness and looks remarkably like glass.

The whole model seems a perfect replication of the original car's construction starting with metal box frame construction and the faux wood subframe. The suspension doesn't just operate, it works exactly as the real car based on real metal multi-leafed transverse mounted springs that combined have just the right tension in combination with the double wishbones and coil assisted shocks to provide the proper stance under the weight of the model.

The wheels that support this model are just the type of hand-wound wires that we almost take for granted from CMC and they are shod in Excelsior 4.75/5.00 17" tires.

Releasing the louvered bonnet covers from their spring loaded retainers, there are swing-out supports on the firewall to support them. The 2257cc 6 cylinder engine is so detailed, that by the time you take in all in, you could probably build your own. It's so easy to get caught up in all the bells and whistles and springs and wires that subtleties like the machining swirls on the firewall and the casting IDs on the engine can be totally missed.

The cockpit on this roadster is very simple with all the glitz and panache of a 1930's kitchen appliance. It's all faithfully reproduced here and the leatherwork is just perfect. There a small storage boot just behind the cockpit and, if you're not afraid of losing the three tiny nuts that secure the spare tire cover, you can access and remove the spare. The threaded chromed metal gas cap can also be removed. I guess if there was anything about this model that made me wish for more, it would be the lack of an up-top option. You know... with a 1600 parts count already, what's a few more?

Many of us collectors lamented the discontinued 1/24 line of those great prewar German classics especially those from the AutoUnion group of marques. This model may just portend a continuance of the line in this larger scale. This particular model has a projected run of 4000 pieces in each of three color combinations with a blue/silver and a yellow/black variant to be released later. I highly recommend this model whether these prewar classics are an important part of your collection or not. Every time I want to use a CMC model to define "museum quality replica", their next release just seems to break new ground.
