Some cars serve utilitarian purposes. Some cars look good. Some cars are rolling works of art. The 1937 Alfa Romeo 2900B is one of the rare few in the last category. The Thirties seemed to be a spawning ground for great and beautiful cars. Of such mythical stuff was the 2900B made. The coachwork and detailing were exquisite. A muscular, supercharged, double overhead cam, straight eight, propelled it to a top speed of 120 mph. All these things, and the fact that less than 40 were produced, made this car a legend. It is said that people stopped what they were doing just because they heard this Alfa's engine start up! Now, that's charisma.

When I showed this image to a friend of mine, who's not a die cast collector, his eyes widened and he remarked that this was the most beautiful die cast I had shown him to date. I had to second that opinion. This image of the 2900B is worthy of the car it is reproduced from. Done in gleaming red, it has a full suspension system and a nicely detailed engine. In addition, the grille is photo-etched metal, not the more usual chromed plastic, and looks exquisite, with a perfectly miniaturized 'Alfa Romeo' diagonally across it. The wire wheels are a combination of photo-etched metal, backed with black and chrome plastic, giving the wheel depth - an interesting effect. The trunk lid hinges open (to reveal the spare tire), as does the behind-the-seat cargo hatch. There's also a top-up convertible top. The undercarriage detailing is above average. Most of the chrome accents are sharp, but the trunk, hatch hinges and hood latches are merely painted in silver, as are a couple of other accents, which is a bit of a disappointment. Nevertheless, this is still an above-average image overall.

FM came out of the blue with this great looking image of a unique car that has brought up to 3.7 million dollars at auction! It's a worthy addition to any die cast collection of vintage cars. The issue price is $105.
