Racing history is filled with innovative cars that were developed and abandoned by one manufacturer only to be revived as podium regulars by another squad that either had more smarts, a bigger bankroll, or both. Most recently the sub-performing 2008 Honda F1 transformed into the all-conquering 2009 Brawn. The CMC Ferrari D-50 is a model of such successful sequel.

Lancia ran out of operating cash in 1955 after having developed the innovative D-50 and which is also modeled by CMC. The D-50 had unique, dual pannier gas and oil tanks and a trestle-type chassis meaning the relatively compact and square DOHC engine is part of the resistant structure giving the car tremendous traction. The car had an inconsistent season but its superior handling characteristics were obvious. Lancia’s cash ran dry after Ascari tragically died in a test and Scuderia Ferrari acquired the team assets.

The good news for Ferrari was that designer Vittorio Jano also joined the team and at first the car was badged a Lancia-Ferrari D-50. After the tragedy at LeMans in 1955, Juan Manuel Fangio left Mercedes and joined Ferrari in 1956. In only 10 races, the car was dominant, capturing pole 6 times with 5 wins. Fangio won the world driving championship in 1956. Lightning didn’t strike twice. In 1957 Fangio left for Maserati and variants badged the Ferrari D50A and Ferrari 801 mustered only a handful of podium finishes without him. I don’t need to tell you the CMC Ferrari D-50 is stunning. What I do need to point out is that it is a completely separate model from the Lancia.

Of course, you would expect them to get the big things right; for example, the opening fuel and oil fills are on the body of the Ferrari and the panniers are full of quad exhaust bundle. Interestingly, the panniers improved airflow and without fuel lines offer an even more streamlined appearance. In fact, the Ferrari on the whole is sleek by comparison: it’s slightly longer and sits lower with more subtle vents cut in the removable cowl, a smaller windscreen, smaller rear view mirrors. A bit more racy in my opinion.

CMC didn’t cut corners based on similar appearances. The CMC Ferrari D50 has significantly different rivet patterns: more in the rear where the fuel load was moved and not as many on the panniers since their main role in the Ferrari is as an airfoil. Tires on the Ferrari are from Englebert while the Lancia is shod with Pirelli’s. Even the interior is essentially different, dashboard layouts, foot box and visible chassis detail are unique to each model.

Of the model’s 1,349 parts many are in the fully plumbed and wired V8 engine. The size comparison to the CMC Mercedes 196 Streamliner (1954) is shocking. CMC’s always stunning removable wheels feature separate stainless steel spokes and nipples, alloy rims. Removing them (using central locking nut and side correct right/left hand threads) up front reveals the intricate triangular front axle and in the rear a De Dion tube. Front and rear have transverse leaf spring suspension.

When you’re paying for a model of this caliber, you expect mostly metal content, steerable wheels, leather cockpit, lustrous paint…and of course all that’s here. You also expect extras like a cleaning cloth and tweezers to operate the finger fun (filler caps, hood locks, etc.) And you might also expect just something unique – and that’s here to in the form of a model remote starter ‘kit’. At this point, you might be asking yourself “have they thought of everything?” I think the answer friends is, yes – they have.
