We buy models for a reason and it’s not just because we find a lost $20 under the car seat (though I’ve done that).

We buy them for the connections they make, sometimes historic (you have to have it because it’s an important style or it was a three time winner of who knows what) but often times it can be whimsical, irrational or even intensely personal.

When I saw SunStar was reviving their classic 1957 Ford Skyliner, I had to tell my connection story.

It stretches back quite a ways, to the 1964 World’s Fair. My admittedly brave grandparents took me from Virginia to Manhattan as a four year old child to experience that once in a lifetime moment.

One night near the old Hotel Taffy, we went to an old WT Grant store for something that was probably useful or mundane. While the grandparents were in search mode, I found three friction cars and started racing them in the aisles. Yep, I was already a car guy. Well Grandma Hazel knew I wasn’t going to be happy going home empty handed so she told me to pick one.

After launching a vociferous, albeit short-lived objection, I steeled my courage up to make the hard choice. There was a blue pick up truck and a green something or other but the star was a red and white model of the Ford Skyliner. After being exposed all day to modern marvels and curious attractions all day, it seemed perfect. The car with the magic roof was mine!

Ford Skyliners, the real ones, were massive fun and different from anything and everything else on the planet.

Though it was made seven years before the World’s Fair, it had something of a cutting edge about it with its miraculous roof-o-matic concept. Yet even with that dollop of technology, it was styled in that fifties mode where jet age fins were all the rage. Even at the age of four, it was easy to spot “unique”. There's a reason so many diecast models have been made of it in any number of scales.

So when Sunstar brought this gem out years ago, I leapt on it. And now they’re bringing it out again so an entirely new group of collectors has a chance to get it. And that's even better than watching a Lloyd Bridges stand-in stage a cheesy version of his show Sea Hunt! (and yes, that was an exhibit at the Worlds Fair.)

Now, in all fairness, if you’ve been collecting Sun Star’s Platinum Series models, this one might throw you a bit of a curve. It doesn’t have neat touches like multi-part windshield wipers, enamel badging or leather seating and the stance...well, let's just say it's a scooch higher than we remember. Now, that said, it doesn't come with a Platinum price tag either

Mine still displays well years after release with flashy chrome and well applied paint. And yes, I can even get over the visible headlight mounting posts that scream Clinton-era model making technology. I have it my collection amongst a couple other Sun Star land yachts and you know what? It fits right in the family. And I still love to play with that roof. Grandma Hazel would think that was something.
