The Greer Black & Prudhomme A/Fuel Dragster was arguably the most successful dragster of its era if not all-time. GMP has given us this car in 1:18 scale and their work is absolutely breathtaking! The GB&P car started life when Kent Fuller built a 112” dragster frame for Rod Stuckey in the late ‘50’s. Stuckey ran this car as the Cash Auto Parts rail until financial problems ended with the car being handed over to Louie Senter of Ansen Automotive to settle a debt. This car, with Stuckey still driving, won the ’62 AHRA Winternationals at Fontana Drag City, but when Senter’s wife found out he’d bought a rail, she made him sell it. Tommy Greer, a successful machinist and big-time boat racer, purchased the car from Senter and got Keith Black, who’d established a successful business building racing engines for boats, to build him a blown 392” Chrysler Hemi. Greer then commissioned Wayne Ewing, who mostly built bodies for USAC cars raced at Indy, to build a swoopy full body. Don Prudhomme, hot off winning the March (’62) Bakersfield Smokers Meet in the Zeuschel-Fuller-Prudhomme rail, was signed-on to pilot the car.

The car debuted at Pomona on June17, 1962 and won the meet with an 8.73 / 179.63. Over the next two years, the car ran rough-shod over both the local Southern California competition and racers with national reputations the likes of Don Garlits, Chris Karamesines, and “Sneaky Pete” Robinson. During its career, this car won over 200 rounds and lost less than 10 for a 95+% win record. Unbelievable by any standard!. The car, originally painted a red/orange, was changed to yellow because it photographed better, later it gained a front airfoil, had its chassis lengthened from 112” to 136” and ended up being painted a metalflake tangerine. In late 1964, outmoded by newer technologies, the car was sold to a scrap dealer in Nevada. It was raced and resold and later wrecked. Car builder Steve Davis bought it in 1977. The rejuvenation took over 20 years, but was masterfully done using every original part available. Toward the end of the project, ownership transferred to legendary car collector Bruce Meyers. The car now spends most of its time on display at either the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles or the NHRA Museum in Pomona, California. Although it had an unmatched race career, the car is just as significant for establishing the careers of Black and Prudhomme.

GMP’s replication has the car in its most well known configuration: Short wheelbase, yellow, without the airfoil and with the famous custom air scoop. They’ve done an incredible job! The body is formed aluminum, just like the original car and the shape is just as it was…….. lots of nice compound curves…. low in the front, sweeping up to the windshield and parachute pack in the rear! The rear slicks are M+H Racemasters mounted on American Torque Thrust five-spokers, the standard for the time. You can see “Racemaster” beautifully molded into the sidewalls of the tires. The spoked Borani motorcycle wheels are photo-etched and if you look closely, you’ll see the lead solder wrapped around one spoke to balance the wheel. Everything about this car says “attention to detail.” The upper parts of the body lift off to reveal the cockpit aft of the engine and the fuel tank up forward. GMP, this is your best dragster yet and your execution is appropriate for this most significant of all the front-engined dragsters. I’m sure collectors everywhere thank you for this wonderful car!
