It is always exciting news when a new manufacturer brings 1/43rd models to our hobby. This is particularly interesting when the models are of a car that was not previously made. The latest such maker is James Cowen’s Automodello. He chose to launch his new company with the 1964 Griffith 200 Series Coupe. Jack Griffith was a former Ford dealer who wanted to build something that would out perform the Shelby’s. He designed a tubular chassis and purchased light weight coupe bodies from TVR in England. He topped this off by stuffing a 289 cubic inch Ford engine into the chassis. The original car weighed only 1450 pounds. This combination gave the car acceleration of 0-60 in under four seconds with its optional 271 horsepower engine.

The Griffith originally sold for $3995 and increased in price to $4800 in 1965. Total production of the Griffith 200 Series was 192 units with 59 of the slightly modified 400 being built and only 11 of the last 600 series being made. The car had an 85½ inch wheelbase with an overall length of 138 inches.

Two versions of the Griffith 200 are being made. The standard Dark Red version of which 262 will be made and the Founders Edition of which 192 will be made. The Blue Founders Edition is further enhanced with a VIN plate; a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Jack Griffith and is serialized. The Founders Edition will sell for an additional $100 over the $95 price of the standard model.

The paint jobs of both of these resin models are well done. The exterior is enhanced by plated moldings around the side windows and correct black molding around the windshield and rear window. Other plated parts include the hood emblem headlight surrounds, door handles, outside mirror, and bumperettes. A fuel cap, Series 200 script, and a license plate light are on the rear deck. Well detailed wire wheels and dual exhaust pipe tips further enhance the exterior. The interior is done in a light tan and is well detailed. There are no moving parts on the model including the wheels. The chassis is plain. All dimensions are very close to the actual car.

This is a nice model that all sports car collectors will want to add to their collection.
