Once again Automodello has delved into another little known car, this time it’s a British sports car from Marcos Engineering named for the founders Jem Marsh and Frank Costin. Their first car was launched in 1959 and the company soldiered on in various forms until 2007. Costin had worked on the plywood De Haviland Mosquito fighter-bombers and got the idea for wooden frames for the car chassis. The company failed in 1971, initially, but recovered under new ownership and managed to remain in business, with Marsh rejoining the company in 1976. Finally in 2007 they ceased production and liquidated.

After several previous designs, Marcos introduced the 1800 GT in 1964. It utilized the Volvo 1800 cc engine with an overdrive gearbox and De Dion rear axle. In future years the company also used Ford and Triumph engines as well. In 1970 the company produced a car with a six-cylinder engine and a Borg-Warner automatic box for the North American market. Delays in obtaining federalization and changes in order to get US road certification led the company to its first failure.

The 1964 Marcos 1800 was a very cute, high performing little sports car. The Coupè weighed in at only 1702 pounds. Its 108.5 cubic-inch engine with 114 horsepower produced some fine performance, reaching 116+ miles per hour and giving a 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds. With its fastback, aerodynamic styling and short 89.5 inch wheelbase, it was ideal for many sports car racing formulas both in Europe and in North America. Therefore it was available in both right and left hand drives making it also a fun little road car.

Automodello, as usual, features a flawless paint job on their models. The nose includes a tiny Marcos badge, easily read with a good strong magnifier. The headlamps are enclosed under sloping covers that help maintain the sloping front end. A neatly detailed blackened grille and half bumpers set off the front end. Chrome hood release latches appear on both front fenders. The photo-etch window frames are well set and do not appear to be likely to come off. Tiny push button openers are set in on each door. A large rear window is set in the fastback rear. A Marcos nameplate appears above the deck handle and the license plate beneath it. Dual tail lamps and back-up light lenses are found on the rear end of the car as are wrap-around half bumpers.

The red left-hand drive model is limited to quantity of 499 units and sells for only $119.95 while a blue with black interior right-hand drive version is available at the same price and in the same limited quantity. In addition a black with a tan interior, LHD Homage Edition, in a very limited quantity of 24 at $199.95, and dark blue with black interior RHD Tribute Edition in a quantity of 64 at $149.95 are also available. The models may be purchased from Legacy. In addition, the website at www.automodello.com includes a complete list of worldwide Automodello dealers. If you are a sports car lover, you will not want to miss out on this exciting little car.
