Another great new model from Jim Cowen’s Automodello is the 1967 Intermeccanica Italia (item #AM-INT-ITA-RD) top down Roadster. Like many other previous models done by Automodello, the Intermeccanica spans both sides of the Atlantic. In 1959 Frank Reisner left Canada and founded Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica in Turin, Italy. Frank had been born in Hungary in 1932 and fled Budapest seven years later with his parents for a safe home in Montreal. Frank and his wife, Paula, built and raced a sports car before leaving for Italy and settling in Turin.

The first products of the new company were speed equipment and exhaust systems for various cars. They got interested in Formula Junior racing and produced several 500cc cars, they went on to produce the Buick V8-powered Apollo GT. Various other cars followed, including a joint venture with Jack Griffith and the Phoenix for John Fitch. For 1967 an American distributor was found for the Ford V8-engined Italia. The first eight cars used the 271hp 289ci engine. Subsequent cars were powered by the 302ci V8 with 250hp and finally by the 351ci/325 hp version. Over 500 of the Intermeccanica cars were built, no small feat for a minor independent. As economic problems developed, the company moved to California and eventually to Vancouver, BC where Franks’s son, Henry continues the business. Today, they manufacture a fiberglass replica of the Porsche Speedster with other replicas planned.

The Automodello Intermeccanica is finished in a brilliant red, befitting the car’s Italian heritage. The paint job is flawless. The clean lines of this sports car are unencumbered by unnecessary trim pieces. The grille is decorated with the company’s emblem of a standing brass bull. Air scoops are at the hood where it meets the cowl and on the front fenders between the doors and the wheels. The rear deck has I T A L I A lettering. The tan interior is well-detailed with a 3-spoke wood racing steering wheel, full instrumentation and a console-mounted gear shift lever and pull-up emergency brake. Interior door handles complete the interior. A matching tan tonneau cover has tiny snap-down chrome buttons all around and wrinkles in it give it a nice canvas-like appearance. The car sits on four wire wheels with knock-off hubs. Double exhausts extensions appear under the rear bumper.

Once again Automodello has managed to produce a beautiful historic sports car for only $95. Production build-up is limited to 399 units. If you like sports cars you will want this one.
