1967 Porsche 911S – Improving Perfection

I feel like I should be writing this entire review in italics! Forget that it may not be very functional for you as a reader. Porsches weren’t intended to be functional from a passenger perspective, yet they included rear seats in their 2+2 sports coupes. Porsche’s were intended to be fast. And when I look at AUTOart’s new 1967 Porsche 911S in light ivory, that’s all I can think about doing – going fast. As Ricky Bobby repeated when he stole his mama’s wagon, “I wanna’ go fast!”

Just two years after its introduction in 1964, Porsche released an improved 911 sport coupe that was lighter and more powerful, beginning a long line of technological and performance enhancements they would come to be known for in the automotive world. Of course the exterior design was essentially unchanged, as have most model year changes over the course of the last 46 years since the first 901 rolled off the assembly line. That’s not a complaint. It’s a 911 and this is what 911s are supposed to look like, especially one designated as an S model. A simple character placed after the name of any car, and enthusiasts immediately identify that this model has something special, rather Super to offer.

In fact, under the hood, Porsche modified the 911S’ rear mounted engine to produce an additional 30 horsepower placing total output as high as 180 horsepower at a full 1,000 RPM higher to 7,300-rpm redline. To help stop the more powerful car, Porsche equipped the 911S with bigger 4-wheel ventilated disc bakes by 1967 and further reduced the curb weight by changing the wheel design from the 15 inch steel disc wheels to the iconic 5-spoke Fuchs alloy wheels. But then again, isn’t everything about a Porsche iconic in design?

So how did AUTOart’s 1967 Porsche 911S fare? Straight out of the box, you’ll notice the beautiful light ivory paint gleams as you hold it in your hands. AUTOart managed to pack a lot of detail into this 911S model at a very attractive price. It is a part of their Millennium series, and in fact, no other 1/18 manufacturer currently produces such a wide variety of 911 models with such precision and build quality. Although the spirit of the S model is inherent with the engine modifications, the high quality model features enough exterior and interior changes like the 1:1 to warrant a position in any Porsche collection.

In addition to the alloy Fuchs wheels that the 1967 Porsche 911S features, there are subtle changes to the exterior including a streamlined front bumper sans guards and license plate, while the S model features fog lamps. On the rear bumper guards, the 911S features a black rubber covering versus the 1964 911 having solid chrome pieces. The rear name plate was also changed to accurately reflect “911S” just beneath the massive rear vent. On the interior, AUTOart has made the appropriate changes to reflect the 911S trim. Gone is the wood trim on the dash and wood steering wheel, and solid leather seats replace the cloth and leather seats of the former model that adds to the sport of the no nonsense 911S model.

Like most AUTOart models, it may not have the organic materials like CMC’s ’64 901, but it still looks great sitting next to the CMC. It features a fully enclosed interior with windows in the up position. Fit and finish are up to the AUTOart high standards. The light ivory paint over the black interior is a perfect match, and it is a combination that you won’t find on any other 1/18 scale classic 911 release. The Fuchs alloy wheels and exterior changes help to give this model enough distinction that will allow collectors to feature a progression of Porsche design and innovation in their collections. AUTOart released the 1967 Porsche 911S in beautiful light ivory and classic silver. The light ivory version is available for sale through Legacy Motors, which helps to support your Diecast Zone.
