By 1968, the Mustang had become a Musclecar legend. This was also the year the Mustang took on more luxury to appeal to more buyers. The Carroll Shelby Mustangs were still the Ford cars to beat. In 1968, the special Shelby Mustang GT500KR convertible was a rare Shelby. Only 300 of these drop tops were built. They truly were “Kings of the Road.” With the powerful 428 Cobra Jet engine, these convertibles roared into instant automotive history.

GMP has cornered the Shelby market. In this reviewer’s opinion, a better Shelby Mustang cannot be had in 1/24 or 1/18, and this Candy-Apple Red 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR drop top only re-enforces GMP’s command of diecast dominance in Musclecars. Like the 1967 Shelby Mustang fastback release in Brittany Blue, this Red-hot convertible is a true precision replica in 1/24. The stance is spot on and looks good with top up or down. I like it with the top down. It looks rakish and ready to hit the highways. The Candy-Apple paint is deep, smooth and glossy, just like an old fashioned candy apple (without all the little bumps)! It’s in the interior that this diecast image becomes a true precision piece of art. The gauges are so realistic, you’ll think you’re looking at the real things. The wood trim is as realistic as I’ve seen. Take a good look at the picture. The removable rubber floor mats are still provided and add further realism. What I like in the GMP models is the removable antenna. This is a part that is often so fragile in 1/24 and once it breaks, it’s near impossible to repair. The seats move forward and the seat belts are real cloth.

For those who have the GMP 1967 Brittany Blue Shelby Mustang, you know that the engine bay is an area that gets extra attention from the guys in Winder, Georgia. The fire breathing Cobra Jet 428 in this 1968 GT500KR drop top has gotten the same level of detail. Fully plumbed and wired, it’s a true miniaturization of the actual engine. There is no detail missing. You can proudly display this model with hood up. The trunk is replicated faithfully as well.

GMP has always pushed their level of diecast precision higher with each new release. Their 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR convertible is an example of diecast art. I can find nothing to niggle at on this image. It’s the best representation of Carroll Shelby’s Mustang dream machine on the market. GMP has already pre-sold a high volume. The real 1:1 car is a rare collectible. This 1/24 will become one as well. Grab one for your shelf before these roar off into the sunset without you. Legacy Motors has them available now.
