Holy Diecast Batman ! ! After a seemingly endless wait, the HotWheels Elite Batmobile is finally here ! Equipped to defeat the dastardly deeds of the Penguin, Joker, Riddler, Catwoman, and the other arch-villains of Gotham City, the Batmobile will add a level of light-hearted whimsy to your collection that will put a smile on everyone’s face.

The Barris Batmobile was originally created in three weeks in late 1965 when producer William Dozier went to George Barris needing a Batmobile that he would use in his new ABC- TV series Batman. Barris had a ten-year-old “Lincoln Futura” concept car that he had purchased from Ford Motor Company for a buck ($1) and turned this car into the Batmobile.

Bruce Wayne/Batman was the “thinking man’s super-hero” and relied more on technology than super-powers to thwart the enemies of the citizens of Gotham City. So the Batmobile was equipped with a whole host of features that allowed it to do seemingly impossible feats in pursuit of criminals. It was equipped with a Bat-tering ram, an on-board Bat-phone, a nose-mounted chain slicer, lasers, rocket launchers, an on-board mobile crime computer, a police beacon and two ten-foot Deist parachutes and a Bat-turn handle to execute almost instantaneous 180-degree reverses of direction. When enemies of the Dynamic Duo got too close, the car could dump a load of nails on the street or emit a cloud of smoke to thwart any evil pursuer

When you look at the car, the first thing that catches your eye is the deep tuxedo black paint with the garish red-orange outlining of the body panels. Batman did most of his good work under the cover of darkness and the producers wanted a car that would show its bat-like shape at night. The side-by-side cockpits are covered by jet fighter-like dual bubble canopies that protect Batman and Robin from the wind-blast at triple-digit speeds. The glazing is nice, but Mattel has chosen to paint the chrome edging instead of using a plated piece. Photo etched door handles and a cowl-mounted Bat-detector have been added to this upgraded version. There is a photo-etched screen at the nose and the intake for the engine can be seen peeking below the lower body fascia. Can you spell “Foreign Object Damage” ? Behind the rear canopy sits the three pipe organ-like rocket launchers and the rear hatch allows access to the Mobile Crime Computer. The rear of the car is highlighted by the two ‘chutes bracketing the turbine’s outlet and scalloped Bat-fins. The Gotham City license plate is correctly 2F-3567.

The doors open on dog-leg hinges which seem a little dated. The rotating beacon and orange running lights sit high on a bridge between the forward and aft sections of the canopy and the red Bat-phone with coiled cable sits on the console between the fire extinguisher and the multitude of levers and switches required to operate the car’s many functions. Black leather seats with red-orange piping and Bat-seat belts hold Batman and Robin during hard cornering and Bat-turns. The chopped steering wheel is a replica of the 1958 Edsel wheel in the real car. The car rolled on Rader wheels.

The engine bay houses the atomic turbine which is bright-chromed with a couple of molded fuel lines going to the intake/compressor section of the engine. The underside of the car is fairly rudimentary with a huge molded-in drive shaft and rear axle mounted on leaf springs. The outlet pipes run from the turbine all the way to the rear of the car and the jet nozzle.

All-in-all, I like this car a lot ! It brings back pleasant memories of getting my homework done so I could watch the show on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
