The Volvo brand, an automobile manufacturer known for their outstanding safety and longevity records, is in my mind associated with big and boxy models of yesteryear that looked like mini tanks rolling around the roadways. Leave it to AUTOart to bring this 1/18 scale Volvo 240 Turbo model to market. The 2-door saloon Volvo 240 Turbo was introduced in 1981 with a turbocharged inline 4-cylinder OHC engine. Volvo stated that the 240 Turbo offered spectacular performance and answered in full to the classical proverb 'a wolf in sheep’s clothing’. The 240 Turbo rally cars were modified to participate in the European Touring Car Championship and other rally races. The rally versions sported a rear deck lid spoiler, BBS style wheels, gutted interior with roll cage, and a rally sport seat among other racing options that varied by team.

AUTOart has so far released three versions of the Volvo 240 Turbo in touring competition trim, the plain body version seen here, the 1986 Belgium Zolder circuit winner driven by Johnny Cecotto and Thomas Lindstru, and the 1985 Wunstorf DTM Winner #21 driven by Per Stureson in full racing livery. AUTOart's Volvo 240 Turbo versions of these models are great renditions of classic touring competition cars of the 1980s. They got the look and feel of the distinctive Volvo design from the boxy headlights, trademark grill and badge to the rear tail lamps and overall shape. The Volvo 240 Turbo is a large car for a two door saloon. In fact it is nearly the same length as a ’56 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Sedan! Inside they've totally stripped out the interior and replaced it with the rally roll cage, Rally Elit sport seat, fire extinguisher, and blue safety harnesses.

AUTOart has a solid reputation for their paint applications, and the Volvo 240 Turbo is no exception. The milky white finish is flawless and perfect all around. The BBS style wheels, while not branded as such, look great and are an excellent effort by AUTOart as are most of their wheels. Although the wheels are matched to unbranded wide track low profile tires, they complete the touring competition look of this Volvo 240 Turbo. After seeing images of a stock 240 Turbo engine compartment, this part of the replica along with the trunk, looks a little bare. The two compartments are consumed by metallic silver, blue, and gold painted parts that when viewed against the white body, give this a colorful and sterilized appearance.

The hood opens on scissor style hinges that adequately support it without incident. It also comes with a hood prop to assist the hood but I didn't find a need for it. The rear deck lid also opens on similar styled hinges and also features a prop to assist the trunk lid’s open position. However, you may need to use a non abrasive tool to assist with opening the doors. The shut lines are so fine that you may not be able to fit your fingernail to pry them open. They’re that thin!

If you collect rally cars or European race cars of the 1980s, then you'll want to add a AUTOart Volvo 240 Turbo to your collection. The model comes attached to a plastic base with a window box with the hood and trunk secured by thin wire from beneath the base. The doors are secured internally with tiny hooks and bands to keep the model safe during shipping. Legacy Motors, which supports the Diecast Zone, has the plain body and Zolder versions available for sale and you can be confident that you’re model will arrive in pristine condition.
