The 1989 Honda NSR500 #27, piloted by rising Australian talent Mick Doohan, was a compelling presence in that season’s WGP 500 class. Doohan, then a young star in Honda’s Rothmans team, donned the iconic number 27 and brought raw aggression to the bike’s notorious two-stroke powerband—though he didn't secure any wins that year, he clinched a podium and finished 9th overall in the championship. What set Doohan’s 1989 campaign apart was how he managed one of the toughest machines ever made: early NSR500s were brutally powerful, with searing acceleration and sharp handling quirks. Despite these challenges, Doohan’s fearless style and adaptability foreshadowed his future dominance in Grand Prix racing.
