In the old days, brakes were not a part of the vehicle to be shown off as something decorative, such as chromed engine parts or anodized wheels. The brakes, which convert the kinetic energy of the moving vehicle into heat energy through friction, were once just dirty and often rusty cast-iron parts hidden inside the wheel, quietly (or sometimes not) performing their duty.

With modern performance cars offering more power and speed, as well as higher curb weights, the size and capacity of the brakes have also increased to produce the kind of stopping power that is needed in today’s cars. Since the late 1980s, when lighter alloy wheels began to open up increasingly larger windows into the brake’s hot, dusty, and dark world, brake calipers on sport cars began to be painted in bright colors. They became something to look at; indeed, something cool to differentiate vehicles and draw people’s attention. Car dealers started to offer special colors for brake calipers, and today the option can sometime cost thousands of dollars on some supercars. Car designers nowadays also design wheels with thin and widely spaced spokes, both to shave weight and also to show off the colorful brake calipers. The caliper face has since become a promotional space for brands and logos because people can now see it.

Large aluminum calipers with six or more pots are expensive car parts. They are primarily fitted on supercars such as those from Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, and Porsche, though people often spend thousands of dollars to retrofit big-brake caliper kits to lesser cars.
