The Porsche 917/20 “Pink Pig”, driven by Willi Kauhsen and Reinhold Joest at the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans, was one of the most unusual and memorable prototypes ever to compete at La Sarthe. Joest was an accomplished German endurance racer who later became one of Le Mans’ greatest team owners, while Kauhsen was a successful Porsche works driver. The one-off 917/20 was designed by Porsche and SERA to combine the low-drag efficiency of the long-tail 917 LH with the handling characteristics of the short-tail 917 K, resulting in an unusually wide, rounded body. Its 4.9-liter air-cooled flat-12 and distinctive pink paintwork covered with outlines and names of butcher’s pork cuts earned it the unforgettable nickname “Pink Pig.” The car qualified seventh and climbed to fifth place before retiring shortly before the race reached halfway, but its extraordinary appearance has made it one of the most iconic Porsche race cars in history.
