The McDonnell F-101B Voodoo, serial number 58-0264, served during the Cold War era when the U.S. Air Force maintained a constant alert against the threat of Soviet bomber attacks. Based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona, the 15th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron operated the Voodoo from 1960, using its advanced radar and fire-control systems to intercept potential threats in all-weather conditions. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojet engines with afterburners, the two-seat F-101B could reach speeds approaching Mach 1.85 and was armed with AIM-4 Falcon air-to-air missiles and, in its upgraded configuration, AIR-2 Genie nuclear rockets. Aircraft 58-0264 had a particularly notable history: on December 15, 1962, it was lost following a midair collision with another F-101B during a cross-country flight from Davis-Monthan to George Air Force Base in California; fortunately, both crew members ejected safely. Its story reflects the speed, technological ambition, and demanding operational realities of America's air-defense mission during the early 1960s.
