The 1973 Buick Riviera featured in The Rockford Files was one of the memorable cars to appear alongside James Garner, who played private investigator Jim Rockford. The Riviera appeared in Season 1, including the episode “The Oracle Wore a Cashmere Suit,” and was used in the show's action sequences rather than being Rockford's regular car—the familiar gold Pontiac Firebird was his signature vehicle. The Riviera itself was especially distinctive for its dramatic “boattail” rear design, one of the boldest styling statements of 1970s American luxury cars. Although not a race car, its powerful V8, long low body, and unmistakable styling made it perfectly suited to the car-filled world of The Rockford Files, where automobiles frequently played an important role in the action.
