The 1976 Cadillac Seville marked a major departure from Cadillac’s traditional full-size luxury cars, introducing a more compact, European-influenced sedan without sacrificing Cadillac’s emphasis on comfort and refinement. Cadillac described the Seville as an entirely new type of Cadillac—more compact and agile while remaining distinctly luxurious—and its clean, formal styling and wide stance gave it a sophisticated presence. Built on a shortened GM X-body platform and powered by a 350-cubic-inch V8 with electronic fuel injection, the Seville was also notable for bringing advanced technology to the luxury market; Cadillac had become the first U.S. automaker to employ electronic fuel injection in 1975. The Seville’s combination of smaller dimensions, premium appointments, and modern engineering helped establish a new direction for Cadillac and made it a distinctive alternative to both traditional American luxury sedans and increasingly popular European imports.
