The 1981 Volkswagen Golf MkI GTI No. 7, driven by Alfons Stock and co-driver Paul Schmuck in the Rallye der Städte (Rally of the Cities), showcased the agility and sporting spirit that made the original Golf GTI a legend. Introduced in 1976, the GTI combined a lightweight, compact hatchback body with a lively 1.6-liter fuel-injected four-cylinder engine, delivering nimble handling and impressive performance against larger, more powerful rivals. Its front-wheel-drive layout, responsive steering, and excellent power-to-weight ratio made it particularly well suited to demanding rally stages. The No. 7 competition car represents the early era of the hot hatch, when Volkswagen proved that a practical family car could also be a formidable and exciting motorsport machine.
