The 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera RS was a purpose-built lightweight interpretation of the 911, developed with the spirit of Porsche’s Carrera Cup racing program and engineered for maximum driver involvement. Its naturally aspirated 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six produced 260 horsepower, paired with a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. Porsche aggressively reduced weight by deleting features such as power steering, air conditioning, rear seats, sound insulation, and power windows, while adding an aluminum hood, thinner glass, seam-welded chassis, and lightweight 17-inch magnesium Cup wheels. Weighing roughly 2,700 pounds, the RS was dramatically lighter and more focused than the standard Carrera 2. Its combination of rear-wheel drive, a lowered and stiffened suspension, motorsport-derived brakes, and an uncompromising minimalist interior made the 964 RS one of the defining driver-focused sports cars of the early 1990s.
