The Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato No. 1 competed in the 1961 24 Hours of Le Mans with drivers “Franc” (often listed in period records as François/Francis), Jean Kerguen, and Jean-Pierre Colas. Kerguen and Colas were experienced French endurance racers who competed during the golden era of GT racing, representing Aston Martin’s effort against dominant Ferrari machinery. The DB4 GT Zagato was one of the most exclusive and beautiful competition cars of its time, combining Aston Martin’s powerful 3.7-liter twin-cam inline-six engine with lightweight Italian coachwork from Zagato. Its hand-crafted aluminum body eliminated unnecessary weight, while its aerodynamic shape, short wheelbase, and aggressive stance gave it exceptional agility compared with heavier GT rivals.
