The 1977 BMW 3.0 CSL No. 72, entered by Luigi Racing, competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a driver lineup featuring British racing driver Tom Walkinshaw and Belgian drivers Eddy Joosen and Claude de Wael. Known as the legendary Batmobile because of its aggressive aerodynamic bodywork, the 3.0 CSL was powered by a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated inline-six engine producing approximately 400 horsepower in racing specification. Its lightweight construction, wide fenders, distinctive front air dam, and prominent rear wing made it one of BMW's most recognizable competition cars. Carrying the white-and-red UFO Jeans and Castrol sponsorship, the No. 72 qualified 47th but unfortunately retired after just 46 laps because of engine failure. Although it did not finish, this entry represents BMW's determined effort to compete in international endurance racing during the celebrated Group 2 and IMSA era.
