The 1955 Maserati 300S 3.0L Spider #35, driven by American racers Bill Spear and Sherwood Johnston, secured an impressive third-place overall finish at the 12 Hours of Sebring, also earning second place in the three-liter sports-car class. The Maserati 300S featured a 2,989 cc naturally aspirated inline-six engine with dual overhead camshafts, producing approximately 245 horsepower, paired with a lightweight open-top body and a balanced chassis designed for endurance competition. Bill Spear was an accomplished American sports-car racer, while Sherwood Johnston was known for his competitive success in American road racing. Their #35 Maserati demonstrated excellent speed and durability, finishing just two laps behind the winning Jaguar D-Type and ahead of another factory Maserati 300S. Its elegant Italian styling, powerful six-cylinder engine, and successful endurance-racing pedigree made it one of Maserati’s most celebrated sports cars of the 1950s.
