The Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe No. 9 competed at the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans with American drivers Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant. Gurney was one of America’s greatest all-around racers, later winning Le Mans outright in 1967, while Grant was an accomplished sports-car and open-wheel competitor. The Daytona Coupe was created specifically to overcome the Cobra roadster’s aerodynamic limitations, using Peter Brock’s radically streamlined fastback body to reduce drag and dramatically increase top speed. Powered by a 4.7-liter Ford V8 producing around 390 hp, the lightweight coupe could reach approximately 185 mph on the Mulsanne Straight. The No. 9 was particularly distinctive for its dark-blue-and-white livery and closed aerodynamic body, but unfortunately retired with an engine failure after starting 12th.
