The Ligier JS39 No. 25, driven by British veteran Martin Brundle at the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami, was part of Ligier’s competitive Renault-powered campaign. Brundle qualified 12th but retired after 57 laps following a spin, while teammate Mark Blundell brought the sister JS39 home in an impressive third place. The JS39 was powered by a 3.5-liter Renault RS5 V10 producing approximately 780 hp at 13,800 rpm and featured a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque and six-speed semi-automatic gearbox, which was a first for Ligier. Its combination of the naturally aspirated Renault V10, relatively light 505-kg chassis and sophisticated aerodynamic design made the JS39 a distinctive example of early-1990s Formula 1 engineering.
