The 1991 Mercedes-Benz C11 Sauber 5.0L V8 Twin-Turbo was one of the last great Group C endurance prototypes, driven that season by stars including Michael Schumacher, Karl Wendlinger, Fritz Kreutzpointner, Jean-Louis Schlesser, Jochen Mass, Alain Ferté, Jonathan Palmer, Stanley Dickens, and Kurt Thiim. Although Mercedes introduced the newer C291 with its 3.5-liter naturally aspirated engine in 1991, the proven C11 was retained for the 24 Hours of Le Mans because of its greater reliability and performance. Its 5.0-liter Mercedes M119 twin-turbo V8 produced roughly 720 hp in race trim and up to 850 hp in qualifying, driving a lightweight carbon/Kevlar monocoque with highly developed aerodynamics and enormous high-speed downforce. The C11's combination of tremendous straight-line speed, strong turbocharged torque, and remarkably stable handling made it a standout among Group C racers; at Le Mans, Schumacher, Wendlinger and Kreutzpointner's #31 C11 finished fifth overall, with Schumacher setting the team's fastest race lap.
