The Ferrari F40 LM #60, driven by young French star Jean Alesi for Ferrari France at the 1989 IMSA Laguna Seca round, made a spectacular competition debut by qualifying second and finishing third overall in the GTO class, behind the dominant four-wheel-drive Audi 90 Quattros. Alesi, the newly crowned International Formula 3000 champion and future Ferrari Formula 1 driver, even led the race early on. The Michelotto-prepared F40 LM was far more than a road-going F40: its 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8, race-tuned aerodynamics, lightweight construction, large adjustable rear wing, racing slicks and competition brakes transformed it into a formidable GT racer. Particularly memorable was its raw, electronics-free power delivery and spectacular oversteer; Alesi later recalled that the Pirelli tires struggled to contain the F40's enormous performance.
