BMW M1 M88 #26 1979 ProCar Series 1:18

loading...

The 1979 BMW M1 Procar #26 was a factory-prepared racing machine fielded by BMW Motorsport and driven by French Formula One star Jacques Laffite. Laffite was an accomplished Grand Prix competitor who brought considerable experience and precision to the Procar series. The M1 featured a mid-mounted, 3.5-liter BMW M88 inline-six engine producing approximately 470 horsepower, sending power to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. Its low, wedge-shaped body, wide fenders, and distinctive BMW Motorsport blue, purple-red stripe graphics made it instantly recognizable. The Procar Championship was unique because leading Formula One drivers competed in nearly identical BMW M1s against experienced sports-car racers, creating thrilling, closely matched racing before Grand Prix weekends. At Zandvoort in August 1979, Laffite drove the #26 to second place, demonstrating the car's speed and competitive strength.
