The 1979 BMW M1 Procar #14 was a spectacular example of BMW Motorsport’s ambition to bring Formula One stars into a dedicated sports-car racing series. Driven by Brazilian legend Emerson Fittipaldi, a two-time Formula One World Champion (1972 and 1974) and 1972 Indianapolis 500 winner, this machine competed in the inaugural BMW M1 Procar Championship. Its mid-mounted, 3.5-liter BMW M88 inline-six engine produced approximately 470 horsepower, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. The M1’s distinctive wedge-shaped body, low nose, wide fenders, and prominent rear spoiler gave it an unmistakable silhouette, while its balanced mid-engine layout delivered impressive handling. At the Monaco Procar race in May 1979, Fittipaldi qualified third and finished third behind Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni. The Procar series was unique because it regularly pitted leading Formula One drivers against accomplished sports-car racers in virtually identical BMW M1s, making the #14 a memorable piece of late-1970s motorsport history.
