The Ferrari 156 “Sharknose” #20, driven by German racing star Wolfgang von Trips at the 1961 French Grand Prix, was one of the most technically significant Formula 1 cars of its era. Von Trips was already a Grand Prix winner, having won the 1961 Dutch Grand Prix earlier that season, and he qualified an impressive second at Reims-Gueux, only 1.5 seconds behind teammate Phil Hill. The 156 was revolutionary for its mid-mounted 1.5-liter Dino V6, with the advanced 120-degree engine producing approximately 190 hp at 9,500 rpm while the car weighed only about 460 kg (1,014 lb). Its instantly recognizable twin “sharknose” air intakes, extremely low bodywork, and excellent power-to-weight ratio gave Ferrari a major advantage over many of its front-engine and less sophisticated rivals.
