The 1969 Porsche 908/02 #1 was a lightweight, open-cockpit sports-prototype racer that demonstrated Porsche’s engineering excellence in endurance competition. Driven by British racing star Brian Redman and Swiss champion Jo Siffert, the car won the six-hour race at Watkins Glen in 1969, showcasing the combination of speed, agility, and reliability that made the 908/02 so competitive. Its air-cooled, 3.0-liter flat-eight engine delivered strong performance, while the short, lightweight Spyder body and advanced chassis provided excellent handling through fast corners. The #1’s victory was part of Porsche’s highly successful 1969 season, when the 908 helped establish the marque as a dominant force in international sports-car racing. The car’s defining feature was its “Flunder” (flatfish) aerodynamic bodywork, an exceptionally low, wedge-shaped Spyder design that reduced weight and improved aerodynamic efficiency. Powered by a fuel-injected, 3.0-liter air-cooled flat-eight producing approximately 350 horsepower, the Porsche weighed around 1,320 pounds, giving it an impressive power-to-weight ratio. At Watkins Glen on July 12, 1969, Siffert and Redman led a Porsche 1-2-3 finish, completing 291 laps and winning by approximately 1 minute 35 seconds. This victory helped cement Porsche’s World Championship for Makes success that year.
