The Porsche 908/2 #29 was entered by Solar Productions, Steve McQueen’s production company, for the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, with Porsche veteran Herbert Linge and British driver Jonathan Williams sharing the driving. Linge was an experienced Porsche factory driver and test engineer, while Williams was an accomplished Formula 2 and sports-car racer who also worked on McQueen’s film Le Mans. The lightweight, mid-engine 908/2 used a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter flat-eight and was specially fitted with three movie cameras to capture authentic racing footage from inside the event. The camera equipment required frequent pit stops to change film and batteries, so although the #29 completed 282 laps and finished 9th on the road, it was officially unclassified for insufficient distance.
